After a Celebrity X cruise we were booked by Cruise2.com for 1 night into the Relais Palazzo Taverna in Rome. There were approx 6 rooms with a reception that is not 24 hours. These are with respect, rooms that Back Packers would choose to book. On the plus side, on our return to Rome Airport there was a Taxi strike and the man on reception booked us a private company to take us to the Airport at a cost of 65 euros. This is compared to the regular Taxis that have a fixed price of 50 euros to or from the Airport. TIP, if you are getting a Cruise ship from Civitaveccia get a taxi to the Rome rail terminal for 15/20 euros and get the train to the port for 9.40 euros for 2 people taking approx 1 hour and then 12 euros for 2 people in a taxi to the cruise terminal. Cost of private taxi from Rome to the port is approx 140 euros. Very efficient trains.

Very nice boutique hotel on quaint side street

Small hotel hidden away on a quaint little side street. Very quiet at night. Daily housekeeping service, which post-pandemic, I never take for granted. Front desk staff were gracious, friendly and very helpful. They ordered a cab for me to get back to the airport on my last morning there. My room was spacious by European standards. (Double single) Very high ceilings. My windows opened up to the courtyard. There is A/C in the room which I used every day I was there. It was warm for October. The rooms aren't fancy but they're clean with a good sized wardrobe for your clothes, bathroom with a shower and a sitting desk. Location is perfect. Very near Piazza Navona, Vatican City, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Tiber River (if you're a runner, good to know) There's also a cute little coffee spot right around the corner for your morning caffeine needs. A wonderful stay!

We stayed here during a family visit to Rome. It is centrally located. They offer no breakfast or airport shuttle. It was clean and staff friendly. They could not get us a taxicab, don’t know if that was because of the cab companies not being available or other issues.

Disappointing

First the good news: the staff, such as it is (one person at a reception desk from 8 am to 5 pm) are friendly and helpful up to a point; the room is cleaned daily (although consistently missing a splash of something sticky on the wall); the location is good but problematic in that taxis cannot come to the hotel entrance but must park in the piazza a short walk away--not good with heavy suitcases. Then the bad news: The hotel may be OF Palazzo Taverna but it is in no way IN Palazzo Taverna, which I know well. It is located up a dark alley of broken pavement and no lights after dark. Furthermore, the outside f the building is covered with very dusty scaffolding (apparently the hotel has no control over this). There are no handrails for the very steep three steps up to the front door. After 5 pm clients are on their own to get in with a key. Inside, there is a flight of very steep stairs, again only partly with a hand rail, to get to the first floor rooms. The in-room breakfast consists of packets of Nescafe and tea plus sugar and a water heater. The internet service is very spotty. And when I asked for a taxi to go out in the evening, I was given a piece of torn paper with a number scribbled on it and told to call it myself. So much for helpful concierges. Of course, I was lucky even to have that as it was after 5 pm and generally there is no one to help with anything at all. I am not sure how this even qualifies as a hotel under Italian regulations. The place is cheap and the location is good for those with strong legs; otherwise there is not much to recommend this unfortunate place.

Would not book again

Firstly, the hotel itself is very nice and close for exploring Rome and a short walk to most things you’d like to see. That’s about where the good things end. The beds, oh my word, SO uncomfortable. We booked a master suite for a couple expecting a double or queen bed, we received two single beds squished together with sheets over both of them. The mattresses gave both my partner and I sore backs and neither of us could stretch out or touch each other without falling into the hole in the middle of the two beds. The bathroom was OK, shower head needed a clean as the water just shot in every direction and bad pressure. Ended up paying a salon close by to wash and blow dry my hair to save the hassle! The room we got put into on the ground floor also had one small window right next to the door. So you felt like you were in a little dungeon that you really didn’t want to spend much time in. Wouldn’t book here again.
